The Devonport Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) has welcomed Devonport City Council’s plan to unlock two strategic CBD land parcels for mixed‑use development, describing it as a positive signal for business confidence and the next step in strengthening the long‑term vitality of the city centre.
Council’s proposal, part of the ongoing LIVING CITY transformation, would see a new commercial building with office and retail offerings, a high‑end multi‑level residential apartment complex above public car parking, and a new urban plaza improving connections between Rooke Street Mall, Stewart and Best Streets and Formby Road. Together, these elements are expected to increase foot traffic, improve public amenity and create a more people‑focused CBD.
President, Claire Connelly, said the announcement aligns strongly with the Chamber’s long‑standing focus on driving sustainable economic growth, attracting investment and supporting a vibrant, connected city centre.
“This is a positive signal for Devonport’s business community. Unlocking these sites for mixed‑use development, including new retail, office and residential offerings, will help attract more people into the CBD and support the long‑term economic resilience of our city,” Mrs Connelly said.
“The Chamber has consistently advocated for greater CBD activation and increased density to ensure Devonport continues to grow as a leading regional centre for investment and jobs. This proposal supports that.”
Mrs Connelly said it was encouraging to see Council creating clear, investment‑ready opportunities for the private sector.
“When government sets a clear direction, it sends a strong message that our region is open for business. This plan provides the kind of certainty investors look for and builds on the momentum created by LIVING CITY and other strategic projects across the North‑West.”
She said the transformation of under‑used “back‑of‑house” parking areas into a high‑value mixed‑use precinct with quality public spaces would have tangible benefits for local traders.
“More people living and working in the CBD means more customers for our retailers, hospitality venues and service providers, more activity in our streets, and a stronger foundation for future investment. It’s a welcome example of smart infill development that supports both business and community outcomes,” Mrs Connelly said.
DCCI looks forward to working with Council and stakeholders as more detailed design and consultation occurs.
