DCCI Outlines Key Priorities Ahead of 2025 State Election

The Devonport Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) has released its 2025 State Election
Priorities, urging all political parties and candidates to commit to a stable, regionally focused agenda
that supports the ongoing economic growth and prosperity of Devonport and the wider community.
President, Claire Connelly, said Chamber members are personally invested in the future of
Devonport and are seeking clear commitments from all candidates.
“Our election platform outlines key projects and priority reforms essential to unlocking Devonport’s
full potential. Our city is growing, but we must maintain momentum through strong leadership,
strategic investment, and policies that deliver lasting community and economic benefits. While we
have other aspirations, the current focus must be on a responsible, sustainable plan,” said Mrs
Connelly.

Three Key Projects to Unlock Regional Growth

  1. Renewable Energy Infrastructure – Fast-tracking clean energy investment, including the delivery of Marinus Link, key transmission upgrades, and storage – is essential to reduce costs, restore investor confidence, accelerate clean energy development and secure Tasmania’s once-in-a-life-time competitive edge.
  1. Devonport Maritime Precinct – With an approved design, land secured, and strong community
support, this $25.5M project is ready to go. Backed by $3.5M in private investment and a
previous $5M State Government commitment, it will position Devonport as a hub for
aquaculture, seafood, marine servicing, and cruising. We’re seeking renewed and additional
commitments to deliver 35 direct jobs and unlock hundreds more across the region in related
    industries.
  2. Strategic Infrastructure Planning – DCCI is calling for a coordinated, long-term infrastructure
strategy and a published List of Priority Infrastructure Projects to attract federal funding, drive
private investment and maintain business confidence across regional Tasmania.

Three Policy Priorities & Principles for a Stronger Future

  1. Budget Sustainability & GBE Reform – The next government must deliver a fully costed savings plan and reform Government Business Enterprises GBEs to cut duplication, improve services, and attract private investment. This includes modern governance, greater transparency, potential sale or part-privatisation of non-core (or underperforming) assets, and prioritising Tasmanian suppliers through fairer procurement practices.
  1. Reducing the Cost of Doing Business – Businesses across the Coast continue to face high operating costs. DCCI calls for a review of state taxes and charges – including payroll and land tax and for measures to reduce energy, insurance, and freight costs in regional areas.
  2. Future-Proofing Workforce and Housing – Addressing workforce participation and housing
constraints is essential to unlock long-term growth. DCCI proposes more support for skilled
migration, investment in VET and lifelong learning, and stronger school-to-work pathways
aligned with industry needs. It also calls for urgent planning reform, land release, and innovative
housing methods to ease the pressure on supply and affordability.

“The Devonport Maritime Precinct is shovel-ready and backed by private investment, it’s a no-brainer
project that will generate jobs, attract vessels, and re-establish Devonport’s marine history. The loss
of port services and closure of the Devonport slipway has led to a decline in skills, investment and
industry opportunities.

Our priorities are practical and achievable, designed to help Devonport thrive – not just for business,
but for the whole community. Our members are ready to invest, hire, and innovate, but they need
government to create the right conditions to make that possible,” said Mrs Connelly.

DCCI will continue to engage with candidates and stakeholders throughout the campaign period to
advocate for our community.
